«Le cercle de l'Union», a gentlemen's club of Paris. There were at least two, the Cercle de l'Union and the Nouveau Cercle de l'Union (Hôtel Perrinet de Jars, 33 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré; Wikipedia, «Nouveau Cercle de l'Union»); the diary does not say which. Not a person.
Relevance to Marie
On 24 September 1874, at the furniture dealer Duval's (DUVAL), Duval says quietly to the deacon that he is sending furniture to Mme Léon but that it is for the prince Blackprince (Marie's nickname for a man in her circle), who «a un rez-de-chaussée ici mais n'y reste presque jamais, et lorsqu'il est à Paris dîne à côté de Duval au cercle de l'Union, je crois» (024.0094). Duval has furnished his yacht.
