Overview

Aulus Gellius (c. 125 - after 180 AD), Roman author of the Noctes Atticae (Attic Nights), a miscellany of grammar, philosophy, history and antiquarian anecdote, much used in French schools as a Latin reader (Wikipedia, "Aulus Gellius").

Relevance to Marie

Part of Marie's self-imposed Latin curriculum in 1875. She translates a passage "très tranquillement" on 15 July 1875 (037), and on 17 June 1875 (034.0363) uses "cette pièce d'Aulu-Gelle - qu'on n'a jamais pu comprendre" as a comic emblem of the incomprehensible (the particular passage is not identified).
