Claire's flower-seller picture, painted by Marie (1883-84)
Overview
The "marchande de fleurs à la brouette" is not Marie's own project but a picture she painted for her friend #Claire, who came almost daily to paint in Marie's studio in winter 1883-84 and whose family circle was that of the maréchale Canrobert (102.0618). (103.0080-0082). Claire finds it "presque fini, grand étonnement" two days later (103.0099), fiddles with the flowers on the 26th (103.0143), and on 14 February Marie writes: "Je pleure en peignant ces odieuses fleurs. (103.0333), worried by the talk of people lobbying for Salon medals. On 19 February the picture is framed; the painter Popelin approves, "sauf la touffe de marguerites ... La seule chose que la petite a fait elle-même" (103.0347).
Marie and this work
So the canvas is largely Marie's work, passed off as Claire's, and Marie feels it as a "faux" she commits and not as friendship. Where it was exhibited or where it is now, the diary does not say; it could have been intended for the Salon, since the passage of 14 February is about Salon lobbying, but this is not stated. Whereabouts unknown; no image. Her own comments belong with the diary's discussion of people who "se font aider" at the Salon, a charge that fell on Marie herself over Un meeting (#Un_meeting).
