Overview

«M. Thompson», with whom Paul de Cassagnac fought a duel on 2 March 1878, the day after his speech in the Chamber: «il s'est battu aujourd'hui à trois heures avec M. Thompson. M. Thompson a été blessé» (078.0339). He is Gaston Thomson (1848–1932), republican deputy for Constantine (Algeria) from 1877, later minister of the Navy (en.wikipedia «Gaston Thomson»). French Wikipedia records that Cassagnac's polemics in the Chamber after his re-election in 1877 «entraînent deux duels dont il sort vainqueur, avec Gaston Thomson et Louis Andrieux» (fr.wikipedia «Paul de Cassagnac (1842-1904)»), and a Figaro report found on Gallica describes the sword duel at Le Vésinet in which «M. Thomson» was slightly wounded in the neck, after the sitting of 1 March (0.85). Marie spells the name «Thompson».
