M. Gustave Pierret, a Frenchman living in Nice (Place du Jardin Public, n° 1), to whom slanderous remarks about Marie's family had been attributed in Rome. Marie describes him on 9 January 1877 as «un grand brun, paupières rouges, barbe noire, tenue correcte» (068.0488).Relevance to Marie
In January 1877 Marie tries to trace the gossip that followed her from Rome to Nice. She writes to Pierret (7 January, 068.0471-0329), receives him on 9 January in her mother's place (068.0487-0344), and drafts a second letter asking him to state in writing what he had said (10 January, 068.0576-0352). Pierret then goes to General Wolf for an explanation, which cools relations with Wolf (068.0754). In the interview he says he hardly goes out in society and knows only «le général Wolf» and three Frenchmen (068.0489).References in Diary
