Overview
The comte de Barrême, an elderly gentleman of Nice, president of the cercle of which M. Barbier was vice-president (027.0073); that club is the Cercle Masséna (Barbier is «du cercle Masséna», 050.0681; on 24 January 1875 the Nice races run «sous le patronage du cercle Masséna», 029.0040). He died in the winter of 1874–75: in December 1875 Barbier is said to have been «l'ami du comte de Barrème qui est mort l'hiver dernier» (050.0681). Mon Journal index: t.3 «Barrême (comte de), 182». The spelling Barrême/Barrème is as printed (note in 050.0681).
Relevance to Marie
- 6 May 1874 (Paris). «Ce vieux Barrême partait» from the gathering round her mother with Tichkevitch and «l'employé» (the clerk), who «désormais a un nom: Galula» (019.0128–0129).
- 29 November 1874. President of the club, one of the escorts at the Italiens (027.0073).
- 6 December 1874. In the waiting room as they leave, he introduces his nephew to the family (027.0186), and Marie hears the street compliment «Oh che bella angiolina !».
- 8 and 14 December 1874. He stays long at the visit (027.0201), calls with the comte Albert d'Olivier (027.0251), and on 25 December calls again at the pavilion; Marie, buttoning her boots, calls out from the balcony and presents «le vieux de Barrême» to her aunt (028.0014–0018).
- 17 and 24 January 1875. His last appearances: a mention on 17 January (028/1875-01-17) and, at the Nice races on 24 January, Marie's snobbish complaint that the stewards are now «Barrême, Page, Jennings, des anciens voituriers et des exjockeys !», unlike the days when the Duke of Hamilton was commissaire (029.0040).
