Overview

Italian composer of songs and singing teacher, born in Ortona; in the 1870s a favourite of Roman society and singing master to Princess Margherita of Savoy; later settled in London, singing master to the royal family, knighted in 1908 (Wikipedia, "Francesco Paolo Tosti"). Kernberger (2013, glossary): "Tosti, Francesco Paolo: composer and singing teacher (1846-1916)".

Relevance to Marie

Among the Romans Marie passes «comme un ouragan» at the Apollo masked ball of 7 February 1877 is «Fosti le chanteur» (068.1005). The docx reading «Fosti» is taken as an OCR error for Tosti, as in Kernberger's translation ("Tosti the singer").

Earlier, in Rome, «Fosti» is her singing teacher: «Enfin Antonelli a amené Fosti, le maître de chant le plus demandé et le plus à la mode de Rome. Il donne des leçons à la princesse Marguerite» (055, 1876-03-21); this fits Tosti, singing master to Princess Margherita (Wikipedia). The edition's index keeps «Fosti (professeur de chant)» (Mon Journal t.8, index, p.277).
