Minerve
Également connu sous : Minerve
Overview
Minerva (Greek Athena), goddess of wisdom and of crafts. Three different uses in the diary: the gold-and-ivory statue of Athena Parthenos by Phidias in the Parthenon (footnote at 026.0034); a ruined little temple of Minerva seen in Rome (066.0369); and the goddess who inspires Nausicaa in the Odyssey (098.0598).
Relevance to Marie
Stub replaced. Footnote 026.0034.2 describes Phidias's chryselephantine statue. WRONG-CATEGORY: a goddess filed under people/mentioned; the Rome temple (066.0369) is a ruin, not the goddess. See lists.
References in Diary
On 22 November 1874 Marie, vain of her beauty, says she would like her statue, if she does not change, in ivory and gold «comme celle de Minerve dans le Parthénon» so that it would be kept as a work of art with her name on it (026.0034). In September 1876 she recalls Rome, «les ruines d'un petit temple à Minerve» (066.0369). In March 1883, reading the Odyssey, she quotes about Nausicaa's courage before the naked Ulysses: «C'est Minerve qui donne ce courage» (098.0598).
