Overview

Henri-Lucien Doucet was born in Paris on 23 August 1856 and died at Saint-Leu-d'Esserent (Oise) on 31 December 1895. A pupil of Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger, he won the Prix de Rome in 1880 and was at the Villa Medici from 1881 to 1884; he later taught at the Académie Julian (1888). Best known for Après le bal (1889) and portraits (Princess Mathilde; Robert de Montesquiou, 1879), he received a first-class pastel medal in 1889 and the Légion d'honneur in 1891. (En. Wikipedia, "Henri Lucien Doucet", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Lucien_Doucet; Orsay artist index; Villa Médicis residents list.) Not to be confused with the couturier #Doucet (Jacques Doucet), whom the same surname usually means in Marie's text.

Relevance to Marie

  • 17 July 1880 (089.0177). The day the Prix de Rome result reaches Julian's: «C'est Doucet l'élève favori de Julian qui a le prix de Rome.» Mlle de Villevieille offers a punch upstairs and Julian pays for another below; they shout «Vive la Commune!» in jest. («Élève favori de Julian» is her wording; Lefebvre taught at Julian's.)
  • 24-25 June 1883 (100.0207, 100.0210, 100.0212, 100.0227). At the École des Beaux-Arts she sees the Rome «envois». Of the two paintings she can look at, she finds Schommer's «abominable, vide, bête, poncif» and Doucet's Ave Maria «exquise»: a white-walled town in sunlight, the Virgin in white, an angel in a flowered yellow gown; on second view the colour is «ravissante» and the handling reminds her of Bastien-Lepage and Morot.
