Overview

The two young princes of Hohenlohe-Öhringen whom Marie watches, teases and caricatures at the Kurhaus of Soden in July-August 1878: Auguste, the elder, dark, whom she calls «Schwarz» (Schwarz), and Hans, the younger, fair, eighteen, whom she calls «Gans» (Hans). The Mon Journal t.12 index lists «Hohenlohe-Oeringen (princesse de), née Pauline de Fürstenberg», «Hohenlohe-Oeringen (Auguste) [Schwarz], fils de la précédente» and «Hohenlohe-Oeringen (Hans) [Ganz], frère du précédent». This entry is for the passages about the pair: «les princes», «les Gans», «ces deux serins».

Relevance to Marie

The Soden comedy runs from 21 July to 16 August 1878: Marie and Mme Rembelinsky each «take» one prince («Je prends Auguste le brun, elle prend Hans, le blond», 081.0509), Marie paints them on their balcony and sends a caricature by post, the princes decline an introduction through Dourassoff («Oh ! non, merci», 082.0097), and the joke ends in a scandal when they threaten to avenge her impertinences (082.0114), which Marie feels as a humiliation (082.0128, 082.0131).
