Who he was

Jules Gaillard (born in Apt, Vaucluse, 10 April 1847; died at Courthézon, 30 September 1933), lawyer and deputy of Vaucluse. He was admitted to the Paris bar in 1874, was elected deputy in February 1882 in the by-election caused by Alphonse Gent's resignation (beating Eugène Raspail), was re-elected in 1885 and 1889 and sat until October 1893, with the extreme left and then the radical left. He defended one of the accused in the 1886 Decazeville strike; from 1894 he was a conseiller de préfecture in Lyon. (Fr. Wikipedia, "Jules Gaillard (homme politique, 1847-1933)", https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_Gaillard_(homme_politique,_1847-1933).)

The identification rests on the diary alone and fits it closely: Marie calls him "député du Vaucluse" (098.0544), says he was elected shortly before 30 April 1882 (095.0003), calls him a radical (103.0186), a lawyer-poet from Avignon (086.0624) and, in July 1883, thirty-six years old (100.0444). That agrees with a lawyer born in 1847 who entered the Chamber in 1882. His literary activity (the poem and the review mentioned below) could not be confirmed from outside sources.

Marie and Gaillard

  • 4 December 1879 (086.0624). Dinner at Mme de Mouzay's. Marie had him invited "pour le complimenter sur son chant des races latines, publié dans la Revue de Mme Adam": a young Avignon man "à face irrégulière de Sarrasin", an advocate and poet, emphatic and strangely calm like a southerner, pushed by La Mouzay. He proposes that she make translations from Russian for the review.
  • 29 December 1879 - 3 January 1880 (087.0089, 087.0130). Again dinner at the Mouzays', where he asks her mother, in the hall, where the lavatory is. He obtains for the family two invitations to Juliette Lamber's ball in the names of Princess Eristoff and General de Meynek; he tells Marie her adoration of Gambetta is "très grand et en même temps enfantin" since she overlooks the physical side; he offers to introduce Joseph Arnaud.
  • 17 January and 10-15 March 1880 (087.0254, 087.0589, 087.0616). At a ball; he warns that Mme Adam's friends are enemies; dinner with the Mouzays and Soutzo.
  • 26 May 1880 (088.0370, 088.0372). On a balcony with Julian during the Mouzays' party; Mme de Mouzay is furious that they chatted instead of listening.
  • 23 June 1880 (089.0023). He brings her the number of La Farandole where he writes about her picture.
  • 27 June - 14 July 1880 (089.0049, 089.0070, 089.0071, 089.0121, 089.0149-0160). He is introduced as the future husband of Mme de Quincy (MME_GAILLARD) (Louise, "si fanée", a widow of about forty, her mother Mme de Motessus de Ballore living at Nice). He improvises, reads and sings, and wants to learn guitar. He tells Marie that Gambetta's strength is that there is no stronger man and that when he blunders nobody can exploit it. On the evening of 14 July he leads a long journey to the illuminations at Belleville and the Buttes-Chaumont with Julian and the future Mme Gaillard.
  • 16 May and 18 December 1881 (092.0012, 094.0082). Visits exchanged with "les Gaillard"; the husband improvises verses on Dina and Marie.
  • 30 April 1882 (095.0003). At the Salon varnishing: "Gaillard vient d'être élu député."
  • 2 June 1882 (095.0125). Marie meets him and Gavini at the Salon.
  • 29 January 1883 (098.0212). He gets the Bashkirtseffs into the Chamber for the debate on the exile of the princes and Marie sends flowers to "l'ex-Mme de Quincey".
  • 21 March 1883 (098.0544). Dinner at the Gaillards', 44 rue Saint-Lazare. Marie judges the marriage a good one for her: a countess who shone in no society, widowed for fifteen years and bored at Nice, married to a younger, intelligent southern deputy.
  • 30 April - 9 May 1883 (099.0254, 099.0359, 099.0382, 099.0394). Lunch on varnishing day; at a "républicano-artistico-poétique" dinner with Clovis Hugues and Julian he improvises verses on Saint-Marceaux's Arlequin.
  • 27 July 1883 (100.0444). Dining, he holds forth on railway-company conventions: "il ne se fait pas encore écouter à la Chambre"; "ce méridional ne me paraît pas extraordinaire mais sa femme qui a dix ans de plus que lui (il en a trente-six) l'adore."
  • 30 January - 11 February 1884 (103.0186, 103.0299, 103.0313). Dinners; Marie talks politics with him (Tonkin and Ferry) and is pleased that "le radical époux de la comtesse de Quincey" takes her seriously.
