Overview

"Doria" in the diary is mainly the two sons of Prince Filippo Andrea V Doria Pamphilj (1813–1876), senator and acting mayor of Rome, who died in Rome on 19 March 1876 (en.wikipedia «Filippo Doria Pamphili»). Marie sees them first at Spa and Ostend in August–September 1874 and next in Nice, then daily in Rome in the winter of 1876, where she builds her romantic terror of the elder one. Wikipedia lists the sons as Giovanni Andrea and Alfonso; the diary's own names are «Gianetto/Giacometto» for the elder (the Mon Journal indexes «Doria (Giacometto)», «Doria (prince Gianetto)») and «Don Alphonse» for the younger (index: «Doria (Don Alphonse, prince) [Blanc]»); matching Gianetto to Giovanni Andrea is probable, not stated by the diary.

  • The grand / elder Doria (Marie's «Doria», «le grand Doria», nicknamed «Plobster» and «Airod» («Doria» reversed) in 1874 for his stature: «Une colonne et pas un homme», 023.0076). In Spa he is the object of the whole party's jokes and of Walitsky's verses (023.0020–0566); Marie writes «Je regarde toujours Doria… Il n'est pas beau mais il est distingué» (022.0416), then he is «le héros ostendais» (023.0562). In Rome she meets him again: «J'ai peur de cet homme. Il me semble que je l'adorerais» after the masked ball on 29 February 1876 (054.0636–0662), when he answers her «Dieu que tu dois t'embêter» with «Heu-hé !» (054.0654–0656). «Doria, majesté, glace et terreur» (055.0115); «Doria est prince dans tout le sens du mot» (054.0655); her fear is a running theme until June (060.0045–0048, 062.0305). On 19 March 1876 his father dies: «Doria est mort ! Rassurez-vous, ce n'est pas mon épouvantail Giacometto, mais son père» (055.0911), and the King orders seven days' mourning (055.0959). From 12 May 1876 «Gianetto Doria… à présent prince Doria» (060.0045). On 25 September 1877 she sees «le prince Doria et son frère» in Paris, where the family meets them on the stairs and at lunch (074.0442).
  • «Le Doria blanc» / Don Alphonse (the younger brother, fair): seen with Somaglia at the café in Nice in 1875 (031.0314, 032.0155 with «le joli Italien blond»), later in Rome (051.0420, 053.0211, 055.0489 «Don Alphonse, (Doria blanc) est à cheval»). He is the one of Maman's matrimonial dreams: «Doria est un des rêves de maman» (052.0267), and Marie herself: «je veux un Doria ou un Hamilton» (037.0245).
  • Other Dorias: «Olympia Doria aura un million cinq cent mille francs de dot» (055.0561; probably their sister: Wikipedia lists an Olimpia among Filippo Andrea V's children, later married to Prince Fabrizio Colonna); «un prince Andrea Doria» in a Genoa café (061.0014–0015, a Genoese Doria, not the Roman brothers); the Genoese-Roman family generally (061.0014 «A Gênes il y a une foule de Doria»).
  • Place, not person: the Villa Doria Pamphilj and the Doria gallery in Rome (see the earlier note below; also 066.0579 «les villas Borghèse et Doria à Rome»). In 064.0553 «grand et maigre comme Gianetto Doria» and in 022.0172 «Il connaît les Doria, Somaglia» are passing references to the family.
