Diaz de Soria

Overview

M. Diaz de Soria, a celebrated amateur singer and wine merchant of Bordeaux, a regular of the Riviera and Paris salons (Kernberger 2013, glossary: "Soria, Diaz de: amateur singer and wine merchant in Bordeaux"; "Diaz di Soria: singer traveling with Barnola"). Kernberger's translation of a later entry records that he was a practising Jew.

Relevance to Marie

Marie meets him in Nice with Barnola on 1 February 1877 («le beau Diaz de Soria, le chanteur incomparable», 068.0914) and invites him to her evening of 3 February, where he brings the tenor Rabsaet, sings romances at the piano with Marie accompanying, and pays her ardent court (068.0940-0616): «Ce teint olivâtre, cette barbe noire, ce crâne nu, ces yeux arabes énormes» (068.0947). He reappears in Marie's life in 1877 (carnet 075) and 1881 (carnet 093).
