Overview

The Carthusian monastery of San Martino on the Vomero hill above Naples, beside Castel Sant'Elmo, inaugurated in 1368 under Joan I. The state confiscated it in 1866 and the National Museum of San Martino opened there the same year (en.wikipedia, «Certosa di San Martino»).

Relevance to Marie

On 26 February 1877, waiting in Naples for Larderel, Marie drives up to «San-Martino. C'est un ancien couvent» (069.0030). The museum delights her: «Les musées glacent, celui de San-Martino amuse et attire», with «l'ancien carrosse du syndic et la galère de Charles III» (069.0031), the marble cloister «avec ses soixante colonnes», the five monks who remain (069.0033), the view from the belvedere over Naples and its roar (069.0035 ff.), and the drive down by Posillipo (069.0045).

Not to be confused with

«Le duc de San Martino» who played the double bass at the Società Filarmonica concert of 25 March 1877 (069.0526): see San_Martino.
