Overview

A young painter of Marie's Paris circle, introduced in March 1880 as the friend of Horace de Caillas (#Caillas) and still a regular acquaintance in 1882. Probably the painter and later politician Étienne Dujardin-Beaumetz (1852–1913), who signed some works «Stephen Beaumetz» and became a deputy and Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts (1905–1912) (Luther College Fine Arts Collection, «Charles Henri Étienne Dujardin-Beaumetz»; Art et Décoration, 1919, as cited in the footnote at 092.0036). Confidence: probable (about 0.7) — the diary gives only «un peintre ami de Caillas» and his place in Tony Robert-Fleury's circle; the identification with Dujardin-Beaumetz rests on the footnote's secondary sources, not on any detail in the diary.

What the diary says:

• She meets him at the Mouzays' and writes him a note: «J'ai écrit un tas de mots et de lettres… à M. de Caillas, Beaumetz, Julian, Tony» (087/1880-03-21, 087.0653); «J'ai fait connaissance l'autre soir chez Mouzay de M. Horace de Caillas et de son ami Beaumetz. Ils m'avaient invitée à aller voir leurs ateliers» (087/1880-03-22, 087.0667). A comic muddle follows when she cannot tell which of the two is visiting: «Caillas-Beaumetz».
• «Beaumetz un peintre ami de Caillas en est épaté et ne le cache pas, nous causons peinture» (088/1880-05-26, 088.0371).
• At Tony Robert-Fleury's: «j'ai trouvé Beaumetz, le peintre vous vous rappelez, l'ami de Caillas… ils ont taché de me donner du courage» (092/1881-05-21, 092.0036).
• «Hier nous avons été au Salon avec Gavini, le frère de Bastien et Beaumetz» (095/1882-05-20, 095.0076).

Identity uncertain

We are not sure who this is. The diary gives only a painter called Beaumetz, «ami de Caillas» (the painter Horace de Callias, b. 1847, Musée d'Orsay artist index), met at the Mouzays' in March 1880, with a studio of his own, and seen at Tony Robert-Fleury's and at the Salon until May 1882 (087.0653, 087.0667, 088.0371, 092.0036, 095.0076). The Mon Journal indexes add nothing («Beaumetz (M.) peintre», t.13 p.137; t.14 pp.201-202, 260). The candidate is Étienne Dujardin-Beaumetz (1852-1913), painter of military subjects, later deputy and Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts, who signed some works «Stephen Beaumetz»: the age, the trade and the name fit, but no source we found links him to Callias or to Tony Robert-Fleury's circle.
