Caillas

Overview

Marie's «Horace de Caillas» is the Paris painter Horace de Callias (Paris, 8 September 1847 – Paris, 5 March 1924), a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts, who exhibited at the Salon from 1870 to 1891 (genre scenes, portraits, mythological subjects; Danaë at the Salon of 1881) and brother of the poet Hector de Callias, husband of Nina de Callias (French Wikipedia, «Horace de Callias», https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horace_de_Callias). Marie spells the name «Caillas»; the Mon Journal indexes have «Caillas (Horace de), peintre» (t.13 pp. 201–260, t.14 pp. 53, 137, t.15 p. 172). Confidence 0.85: first name, profession and Paris in 1880 agree; the diary does not name his teacher.

• 21–22 March 1880. She writes to «M. de Caillas, Beaumetz, Julian, Tony» (087.0653); at the Mouzays' «j'ai fait connaissance l'autre soir de M. Horace de Caillas et de son ami Beaumetz. Ils m'avaient invitée à aller voir leurs ateliers» (087.0667).
• 31 March 1880. At the Mouzays' dinner «Horace de Caillas fait de la graphologie», and Mme Bonsenne wishes to play serious ensemble music with him (087.0757).
• 10 April – 5 May 1880. After a competition in which Breslau had only third place and she none, Marie says she is unworthy of her work «aujourd'hui même à Horace de Caillas» (087.0825); he is a dancing partner at the costume ball of 15 April (087.0857); «la brutale admiration de l'artiste Caillas non sufficit» (087.0862); on 3 May she has success when he is presented again (088.0076); on 5 May she walks the Salon with Kiriewsky and Villevieille, and ends with a visit to his studio (088.0104, 088.0105).
• 18 May – 15 June 1880. He gives her a zither lesson (088.0222) and dines with her at the Mouzays' (088.0231): «Je crois que je plais à Caillas» (088.0239). Beaumetz, «un peintre ami de Caillas», is astonished by her (088.0371); she teases the Cerny that Caillas «a le secret d'agrandir les yeux et de teindre les cheveux» (088.0770).
• Later. His visiting card on 1 January 1881 (090.0507); 21 May 1881, she finds Beaumetz «l'ami de Caillas» at Tony's (092.0036); 28 January 1883, Caillas is among the artists who have called at the house (098.0201).
