Overview

Pindar (c. 518–c. 438 BC), the Greek lyric poet of the victory odes (Epinikia) for the Olympic and other games (en.wikipedia «Pindar»). The Mon Journal t.3 index reads «Pindare, poète grec, 238».

Relevance to Marie

Marie, writing at night on 16 June 1874, laments that she has never learned to express herself, since it is hard «de parler toujours de la même chose et de varier. Pindare seul possédait ce secret» (020.0317). Pindar's odes praise victors in the same few themes over and over, which is the secret she credits him with. The reading of the allusion is ours; she does not say more.
