Show in diary 1 mention Overview
A Spanish family of the porcelain trade at Seville. Charles Pickman, an Englishman from Liverpool, founded the earthenware factory of La Cartuja in the former Carthusian monastery of Santa María de las Cuevas (1839 or 1841, sources differ); after his death in 1881 the firm passed to his heirs, among them his son Ricardo, who is called Marqués de Pickman (Archivo Histórico de Andalucía finding aid; en.wikipedia «Charles Pickman Jones»). The Mon Journal t.14 index has «Pickman y Pickma, (marquis espagnol) : 238».Relevance to Marie
On her Spanish trip of October 1881 the party calls on «le marquis Pickman y Pickman auquel nous sommes adressées par notre consul de Biarritz» (093.0282). Marie describes «de braves fabricants de porcelaine d'origine anglaise enrichis ici et devenus marquis», and dismisses the marquise, «Madame Maria del Rosario Guttierez y trente six choses», as «une petite bourgeoise ronde et fraîche, bref... au panier». Which member of the family she met is not stated; the title of marquess was held in the family, and the sources found do not say whether Charles or his son bore it in October 1881.References in Diary
