«M. Olliver» is the name Marie later gave to the handsome tall man of the Promenade in Nice whom she had taken for Sir Frederic Johnstone in January 1875. Her margin note on the entry of 27 January 1875 reads: «[En travers: Ça n'était point sir Frederick Johnstone mais M. Olliver.]» (029/1875-01-27). This is the man she nicknames «le diable» (029.0117, 29 Jan 1875; 031/1875-04-17 «ce maudit diabolus»). See SIR_FREDERIC_JOHNSTONE for the whole episode (January–April 1875).Identity uncertain
We are not sure who this is. Marie gives only the surname, in a note added when she reread the carnet. The Mon Journal t.4 index agrees that he is the «Johnstone» of January–February 1875 («Olliver (M.), [Sir Frederic Johnstone], 290, 292-293, 295, 297, 302») and t.5 has «Olliver (M.), 14» for the margin list «Hamilton, Johnstone, Olliver, prince de Galles» (031/1875-04-08), but neither says who he was. If you can identify him, we would be glad to hear from you. Most of this glossary was researched with the help of AI language models and checked against the sources cited; mistakes are possible.
