Overview

A Metternich named once in the diary, as the other party in «le duel Montebello, Metternich» (019.0373, 27 May 1874). See Montebello.

Identity uncertain

We are not sure who this is. At Laferrière's in Paris Marie sees Gioia and la Soubise and calls one of them «cette héroïne du duel Montebello, Metternich» (019.0373; Mon Journal t.3 p.205, print checked; the index gives only «Metternich, 205»). The best-known Metternichs in Second Empire Paris were the Austrian ambassador Prince Richard von Metternich and his wife Pauline (en.wikipedia «Pauline von Metternich»); they left Paris in 1870, and no duel of his with a Montebello has been found. Pauline's famous «duel» with Countess Kielmansegg (1892, and possibly a press invention) is far too late. An older RSR note («1870, Prince Richard de Metternich and Count de Montebello fought over Giulia Barucci») has no source and is withdrawn. If you can identify this duel, we would be glad to hear from you.
