Hotel Demouth
Also known as: Hotel Demouth
Overview
The hotel (Demut, Demouth) in St Petersburg where Marie stays on her arrival in the Russian capital on 4 August 1876, with her uncle, a maid and the servant boy Chocolat: «Je suis descendue à l'hôtel Demouth, accompagnée d'un oncle, d'une femme de chambre, d'un nègre, suivie d'un nombreux bagage, et avec cinquante roubles dans la poche. Qu'en dites-vous ?» (064.0405). The source footnote there describes it as one of the most prestigious hotels in the city, on the Moika embankment (the footnote gives no source for this). Eight days later, in Moscow, she praises the Bazar Slave as «infiniment plus propre et infiniment moins cher, et surtout en comparaison de l'hôtel Demouth» (064.0533).
