Show in diary 2,296 mentions Thematic Tag: Family Life
This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs about relations inside the household and the wider family: Maman's moods, Dina, Paul, the aunt, grandfather, the separated father and his side of the family. It is about the scenes, quarrels, affections and judgments that make up family life, not merely about who was present.
Tagging Criteria
- Tag a scene or quarrel with a parent, sibling, aunt or grandparent.
- Tag a judgment on a relative's character or conduct.
- Tag affection, reconciliation, or tension within the household.
- Tag family politics: who takes whose side, the question of the father and his family.
- Do not tag a relative who is only present ("je suis sortie avec maman").
- Do not tag family money and estates, unless the paragraph is also about the relationship (Money, Property & Investments).
- Do not tag illness in the family (Health & Illness) or a death (Death & Mourning) with no family dynamics in view.
- Do not tag society at large, even when the relatives are among the guests (Society & Reputation).
- The bar is that the paragraph is substantively about the theme; a passing word never qualifies. A paragraph takes at most three themes.
- False friends: famille in the sense of a social group ("famille ducale"); les miens (my own people)
Notable Patterns
- Some of the sharpest scenes are between Marie and her mother, often followed by an immediate reconciliation or self-reproach.
- The separation of her parents and the father's family run as an undercurrent; see the glossary entries for the Babanine and Bashkirtseff families.
