Thematic Tag: Art World

This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs about other people's art and the art world as Marie meets it: museums and galleries, exhibitions, the Salon seen as a public show, painters, sculptors and critics. It is the spectator's counterpart of Her Art, which covers her own work and studio.

Tagging Criteria

  • Tag a museum, gallery or exhibition visited, with a judgment on what she sees.
  • Tag a painter, sculptor or critic discussed; a particular picture praised or criticised.
  • Tag the Salon or another show as an event, with its works and crowd.
  • Tag the state of art and the art market in her time.
  • Do not tag her own work, studio, models or Salon entries (Her Art).
  • Do not tag a museum named only as a place she passed or an outing.
  • Do not tag other artists' work discussed purely in terms of her own practice, which goes to Her Art.
  • Do not tag art as decoration in a house or a purchase (Shopping & Errands).
  • The bar is that the paragraph is substantively about the theme; a passing word never qualifies. A paragraph takes at most three themes.

Common French Cues

  • Places: le musée, le Louvre, le Luxembourg, la galerie, l'exposition, le Salon, le Prado, l'Académie
  • Nouns: un tableau, une toile, un maître, un chef-d'œuvre, la critique, le vernissage
  • Names: Manet, Raphaël, Rubens, the Impressionists, Bastien-Lepage (as an artist, not a lover)
  • False friends: exposition = exhibition (also a world's fair); salle = a room in a museum or a theatre

Notable Patterns

  • Travel entries are full of museum visits (Berlin, Rome, Madrid); the Salon opens a May calendar of verdicts on other people's pictures.
  • The Salon and the great exhibitions of Paris give her a running commentary on contemporary painting.

Example Paragraphs

  • `102.0117` — on Manet's retrospective: "incohérent, enfantin et grandiose"
  • `064.0292` — the Berlin museum owes its richness to Greece, Egypt and Rome
  • `096.0079` — the Exposition des Arts décoratifs, visited with the Gavini
