Overview

This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs where Marie writes about animals — horses, dogs, pets, working animals — with her characteristic intensity and anthropomorphising affection. Animals in the diary are rarely incidental: Marie names them, attributes emotions to them, and often uses them as mirrors for human behaviour or social commentary.

Relevance to Marie

Marie kept horses and dogs throughout her life and wrote about them with the same vividness she brought to people. The horse "Chocolat" at the Villa Doria Pamphilj in Rome (March 1876) receives a full comic narrative of loyalty and loss. Her Paris household in 1880 included the dogs Prater, Coco, Pincio, and Pincio's puppies "Chose" and "Machin." Horses appear at the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, at country estates, and in discussions of equestrian culture.
