Notes

The rue de Sèze exhibition: the annual winter exhibition of the Cercle des arts libéraux, held at their premises on the rue de Sèze near the Madeleine. A prestigious small exhibition of invited artists, quite distinct from the official Salon — it was at this exhibition that Marie would encounter Saint-Marceaux's sculpture the following day.
