The Princess,1 Bojidar and Tchernisky dined here yesterday. I am found to have grown fat. Saint-Agathe and Adeline come before dinner.

La princesse, Bojidar et Tchernisky ont dîné hier ici. On me trouve engraissé. Saint Agathe et Adeline viennent avant dîner.

Julian says I appear very calm, that I hold myself in the way singers place their voice. He told Bojidar that I do nothing but pretend to work. This evening Rosalie, undressing me, remarked that it seems to her I am not working seriously this week.

Julian dit que j'ai l'air très calme, que je me pose comme les chanteurs posent leur voix. Il a dit à Bojidar que je ne fais rien mais que je fais semblant de travailler. Ce soir Rosalie en me déshabillant a dit qu'il lui semble que je ne travaille pas sérieusement cette semaine.

I tore the dress in two.

J'ai déchiré la robe en deux.

It comes from the maid or from Julian — because instead of painting the head of the model, who is stupid and expressionless, I paint a head that is alive and interesting.

Cela vient de la bonne ou de Julian parce qu'au lieu de faire la tête du modèle qui est bête et sans expression je peins une tête vivante et intéressante.

Amélie is on the right path, that one — for ten years she has been coming to the studio and doing plaster casts every six months to start afresh. There is not a single interesting student except Filippini,2 and even that is questionable. It is an unparalleled crowd of nonentities.

Amélie est dans la bonne voie elle, voici dix ans qu'elle vient à l'atelier et qu'elle fait du plâtre tous les six mois *pour se remettre.* Il n'y a pas une élève intéressante sauf Filippini et encore. C'est une foule de nullités sans pareille.
