I have brought my canvases to Julian and he is very pleased. The fisherman really must be finished — it may be a small success... Yes, finished — just that... Father Julian is not demanding... In short, he says that Bastien's Père Jacques was admirably done but did not amount to much — whereas this fisherman is true, it is a type, one sees many like him: the placid fellow who sits for hours catching nothing, the head standing out against the water... If it were well done... But there are already good things in it; it is only a matter of... And then the little girl with the umbrella — and then I produce an outpouring of all these ideas on art, of which there are specimens in this journal — [Crossed out: he says I have changed, that] I am literary and "artistic" and that I now know there is something more than mere technical skill... But that is not the point — or rather it is, since it will make me progress...
The idea of my painting is driving me mad. Saint-Amand, back from the country, dines this evening.
