Seeing that I was distressed yesterday, Maman said she would buy a hat and alter a dress — so I dress calmly in gray and we go out around five
o'clock. The outfit described yesterday is far from showy — and so I am proud of the success obtained. After lunch I talked with Mme Karaouleff, made caricatures, we laughed — she is pleasant. She introduced me to a very young man, Lestchinsky, whom the Basilevitch monopolizes; in short I was preparing to go to the Casino — there is a great fireworks display on the terrace. I wanted to dance; I brought exquisite dresses, outfits that are paintings — in short let us cut it short — I stayed at home, because Maman had nothing to wear except her black day dress. In the daytime on the beach it is perfectly fine — but in the evenings! I was going to put on a Louis XV dress in embroidered muslin with a chemisette tight around the neck with a narrow black velvet ribbon. A Manila straw hat with white feathers. Sheer stockings and pointed black shoes. The bodice fits like an angel — a divine waist emerging from those muslin panniers. In any case that is not all: I was, as you may understand, perhaps enraged — these women exasperated me — Maman went out to avoid the scene, and hearing the explosions of the fireworks I threw a watch on the ground (fifty francs of repair), cut two pairs of new shoes with scissors, tore the old thirty-franc hat, and broke two fifteen-franc umbrellas… Naturally they said they could not afford to dress themselves since I was breaking six thousand francs' worth and tearing everything, that it wasn't worth the trouble. Is that nice? Then for two hours we exchanged very violent reproaches about a heap of things that happened two, three, four, or five years ago. And that I could have married Multedo. Then I said I would jump out the window. It is absolutely mad — but what hell! I! Enraged as I was, I almost took pleasure in arguing violently about stupidities, for we had reached the point of disinterring all grievances from their graves; the conclusion in any case is that I am a monster, that I have always been one, that I don't know myself what I want, that I love such scenes and seek only to create them. Then that thanks to my horrible character, my wickedness, I have lost the most beautiful voice in the world and my health. They are naive. To be martyred for nearly seven years every single day and not yet have died of it!! They should give me credit for that. But I no doubt deserve these stupid and degrading torments. I would not even argue with these women — it is pointless; if I cried out it was because I could bear it no more — I would have cried out to the walls!… It is not admissible that she deliberately brought only
a faded dress, knowing all the preparations I was making and hearing me beg her every day to get ready — and yet how to explain it!… We have more than ten thousand francs in our pockets; it would have been so easy to take a thousand and have oneself made… but I am boring you, and you are right. It is too sad.
