Again there is talk of travel; my father, wanting everyone to be cheerful, tries to reconcile us with Maman, who asks nothing better — but you know — in short these people understand nothing. And I could say nothing; I wanted for the thousandth time to formulate my grievances against everyone, against my father — but I would have wept hot tears. It is not only, as my father says, that I desire a proper existence — it is an accumulation of griefs and disappointments of which it is impossible to form any idea, and which you would perhaps understand if you could see how I am weeping as I write. I have reached a point where it is impossible to remain as things are... after all I am only a human creature, and everything... up to... in short even now, in the form it takes — it is not vexing — that Saint-Amand who tried, he says nothing but he knows. This business of the Queen of Spain — yet another season lost, and that when one is young, when one wants everything as others do, when one sees others... For after all, do I live? I prefer intelligent society to elegant society but I have not even that — in the end nothing. I reach the point of weeping at reading a report of an entertainment, or in the morning at the Bois at the enumeration of the horsewomen... I stay shut in — and if I show myself I have a success immediately followed by some horror, and all that makes it still more atrocious.
And they are quite tranquil — they tell themselves it will come; and then if I am calm they say: "Ah, so much the better — she is not thinking about anything." It is enough to die ten times over!!
In the end I told my father that I will not go for the purpose of vexing him, that I have had enough of all of them, that I want nothing in common with him, that he is as useless to me as the others. You will not — or perhaps cannot? It matters little to me.
"You came — what have you done? Nothing. Very well, let us say no more about it; let it be over; torment me no more — I want nothing, speak to me of nothing!"
What is the use of adding [word blacked out: the nausea] of idle discussions and conversations that put my eyes out of service.
Already I see less well. If I no longer have eyes to work with, it will be complete... Besides.
Ah — it is one of the most despairing days of my life.
