Hecht had absented himself yesterday from five to ten o'clock to dine at Puys with the Carvalhos and to see Dumas and his other friends, at ten o'clock he had returned and we made music. The ladies spoke politics, I carefully refrained, especially I refrained from speaking of Gambetta before these ladies who spoke of him frivolously.
Hecht imitates him perfectly, while I was posing he imitated him for me and we spoke of him. I pay attention to what this Jew says because he is the echo of the other.
At midnight we parted and Hecht left this morning at eight o'clock. We are great friends.
Madame and Mademoiselle Poitrineau came to see me. They are two bourgeois women whose acquaintance we made here. The daughter is very beautiful. My family went on an excursion and I painted old Karageorgevitch who, during the two hours the sitting lasted, quarreled with his wife who was lying on my sofa.
I hope you have noticed the great change that is taking place in me little by little. I have become serious and reasonable and then I penetrate more deeply into certain ideas, I understand several things that I did not understand and of which I spoke according to circumstances without conviction...
I grasped today for example that one can have a great sentiment for an idea and that one loves it as one loves oneself.
Devotion to princes, to dynasties moves me, inflames me, makes me weep and might perhaps make me act under the direct impulse of something moving, but there is at the bottom of me a sentiment that absolutely prevents me from approving of myself in all these cardiac fluctuations. Each time I think of great men who have served other men my admiration for them limps and dissipates. It is a sort of foolish vanity perhaps but I find almost contemptible all these... servants, and I am only truly a royalist when I put myself in the place of kings. And you see, Gambetta is not a vulgar ambitious man, the intuition that makes me think so must be strong and justified for me to say it sincerely after having been for three years lulled by the reactionary press.
For myself, I am willing still to see myself bowing before kings but I cannot adore or completely esteem a man who would do so. It is not that I refuse the reflected glory... No, it is understood is it not that I would be delighted to be the wife of an attache to an embassy or a court (only these people are without dowries and want them) but here I speak of my intimate sentiments. I have always thought this but one does not always know how to say what one thinks. I am willing to have a constitutional royalty as in Italy or in England and even so! I revolt at seeing the bows to the royal family, it is a useless humiliation. When the king is sympathetic as Victor Emmanuel was, who represented and served a great idea, or as Queen Margherita is, who is adorable and good, well and good, but these are happy accidents. And it is much more natural to have an elected leader and consequently eternally sympathetic, surrounded by an intelligent aristocracy.
The aristocracy is not destroyed nor created in a day, it must maintain itself but not shut itself away for that purpose as in a stupid citadel.
But the old regimes are the negation of progress and intelligence! One cries out against men, what then is that!
Men pass and one rids oneself of them when one no longer wants them. They tell me that the republican party is full of tainted men. I already told you months ago my idea on this. They speak to me of absurd hatred against the persons of kings. That is not the question. It is not the man who is bad, it is the function that is useless. I respect illustrious families, there have been, there are, there will be; the country must find them, but from there to putting on one's back a man and his posterity, irrevocably, stupidly! no, not that! I say nothing against the power of race, on the contrary, see Prince Jerome and his son Victor, well if these people in entering public life justify by their talent their birth, one will make them presidents of the republic.
Caesarism, copy of the Romans.
Why copy! If intrigues and disloyal maneuvers deceive the people it will be their fault! But with kings it is dispensed from all effort of intelligence and does not even have the chance of choosing well even four times out of ten. It is vagueness, the unknown, routine, imbecility and cowardice. If the people are stupid and choose badly, it is because they deserve nothing better.
These reflections are responses to the things one is in the habit of saying against the republic.
But let us understand each other... My republic is an enlightened, polished, aristocratic republic. (1) what shall I tell you... Athenian. He said it.
(1) Aristocratic, that requires reflections and explanations. Aristocratic by race absolutely confirmed by manners and education in the absence of intelligence. Yes for in the relations of society these are things whose influence cannot be denied. Moreover there is only one equality possible, it is equality before the law, all other equalities are bad jokes invented by the enemies of liberty and demanded by the ignorant.
