Yesterday Madame Gavini took me to the hippodrome, where I was bored.

Hier Mme Gavini m'a emmenée à l'hypprodrome où je me suis ennuyée.

As for politics — read the newspapers. It is quite absurd, and I am stupefied and unhappy. The painting is going badly.

Quant à la politique lisez les journaux. C'est bien cocasse et moi je suis abrutie et malheureuse. La peinture est mauvaise.

I bought the first published volume of the memoirs of the Second Empire by G. de Cassagnac père — with the laudable intention of reading contemporary history as well as Bonapartist history — and on the first page I find a dedication that sends me plunging into the depths... Such things weigh on me dreadfully, and I shall not be able to breathe until I have become something.

J'ai acheté le premier volume paru des souvenirs du second Empire par G. de Cassagnac père avec l'intention louable de lire l'histoire contemporaine autant que bonapartiste et à la première page je trouve une dédicace qui me renvoit dans le troisième dessous... Ces choses-là me pèsent affreusement et je ne pourrai respirer que quand je serai devenue quelque chose.
