That beast Oelsnitz — how I detest looking at her when I think she made me miss Arnaud. [One line cancelled: Jeanne, Berthe, Chaudordy, the Gavinis and Cassagnac]

Cette bête d'Oelsnitz, comme je déteste la regarder quand je pense qu'elle m'a fait manquer Arnaud. [Une ligne cancellée: Jeanne, Berthe, Chaudordy, les Gavini et Cassagnac]

I worked with Jeanne, then with Rosalie. I am setting two things in motion so as to have something to do on the day when I have nothing to do.

J'ai travaillé avec Jeanne puis avec Rosalie. Je mets deux choses en train pour avoir quelque chose à faire le jour ou je n'aurai rien à faire.

We went to the Gavinis', where there was only the Comte de Chaudordy (ambassador to Madrid as recently as a year ago) and Monsieur Pietri, secretary to the Imperial Prince.

Nous sommes allées chez les Gavini ou il n'y avait que le comte de Chaudordy (ambassadeur à Madrid il y un an encore) et M. Pietri, le secrétaire du Prince impérial.

As there were no ladies present I talked, and Gavini said that I am an admirer of Paul — I do not deny it.

Comme il n'y avait pas de dames j'ai causé et Gavini a dit que je suis une admiratrice de Paul, je ne m'en dédis pas.

One admires Bonnat, Capoul, Faure well enough. Only these devil newspapers, by writing about him, go to my head.

On admire bien Bonnat, Capoul, Faure. Seulement ces diables de journaux en s'occupant de lui me montent la tête.

Berthe spent the evening with us, relating how her husband goes to bed and what shirts he wears, etc., etc.

Berthe a passé la soirée avec nous, à raconter comment son mari se couche et quelles chemises il porte etc. etc.
