It is decided — we are going to Ems; it would be perfect were it not for the regret of leaving my Gans. I do not know exactly which of the two is my favourite — but I shall miss their gray suits and their hats tilted on the nape of the neck... This morning I went to play with the Coubé children in view of the Gans.
Little Nick already knows how to say "Uncle Gans" — and when I ask him where Gans is he points to the princes' balcony and says that Uncle Gans has sweets, dogs, and balls. And in the evening he pulled me by the arm to go searching for Uncle Gans throughout the whole park, and finally led me before the door of the chaste and pure dwelling of the Gans which the poor little thing regards as a veritable paradise.
Madame Abaza has bought a zither, and I escorted her home in the evening with a lantern; we encountered the Gans whom I illuminate in passing, and I return escorted in my turn by two women — while Schwarz and Gans still walk about before the terrace. They amuse me!!
At dinner only Schwarz was there; I passed the mustard to Prince Ouroussoff who lost himself in thanks. — These are the small services one renders each other, I told him, with intent. Then another occasion arose over a dropped fan. Schwarz seemed to be watching for a chance to speak with the old prince, who by reason of many departures now sits facing him. Schwarz deigned to say — here you are, sir — in excellent French; then as the old prince reached for the carafe at the same moment as the young one, the latter, taking advantage of Ouroussoff's gesture of retreat in his exquisite politeness, poured himself water and passed it afterward to the older man. With his angelic character he could just as well have shoved the carafe under the table.
These two little canaries have spoken to Rosalie, meeting her in a corridor... I do not know how to manage not to appear to be mocking them.
In the evening Thilenius came and I requested him to treat me for a slight mental derangement I had just contracted in the garden.
