The same cold as yesterday; the same dress. To the outdoor concert, then to the Sapogenikoffs — they are in dreadful terror in their house; they imagine spirits, ghosts, and Horne has shut them up in these ideas, telling them the house is indeed beset by spirits. It has reached the point where Marie felt herself embraced by one of these beings; I would not swear that it was not Cima who had taken, for that moment, the form of a spirit.

In short, to look at me as I stand here I am in despair. For three years I have been hammering at Maman and my aunt, and they have always answered that when I am grown up everything will be as I wish. Well — here I am grown up, and nothing is changed. Yes, changed — for the worse.

Truly I have hope only in You, my God — have pity on me, then, in charity.

In all things I struggle — an eternal struggle against indolence, imbecility, torpor, carelessness. It is fortunate that God sustains me; but often I feel my strength abandoning me, and can no longer summon the courage to continue sustaining this war more terrible than the Seven Years'.

O my God! Protect and sustain me. I am unworthy, but I implore You.

O let my life be set in order.

Let my anxieties and my torment cease! My God, You see that I have hope only in You, since I pray to You — for such are Your unworthy creatures that instead of turning to You first of all, they do so only after having sought help from their ignoble fellow men.

Forgive, forgive me; do not punish me for my voluntary and involuntary offences. My God, hear my prayer and accept my faith, my love, and my humiliation.

Notes

Horne: Daniel Dunglas Home (1833–1886), the celebrated Scottish-born spiritualist medium who conducted séances for European aristocracy and royalty. His presence in Nice reflects the fashionable spiritualist craze of the 1870s.
The Seven Years' War (1756–1763): the great European conflict in which Russia, France, and Austria fought against Prussia and Britain. Marie invokes it as the archetype of a prolonged, exhausting struggle.
