The weather is very fine. I take Maman, Dina, and Walitsky to the station — they are going to San Remo — then go to the Promenade alone. There is a crowd at the Flies' Narrows; just as I was turning left, near the Hôtel des Anglais, I caught sight of the devil. I call him the devil because the first time I saw him he seemed to me to resemble one — towering a head above everyone else in the middle of the Narrows. I wanted to turn back, but it was too late; I went on as far as London House, and then turned — by which time he was speaking to two young ladies in iron-grey tunics, rather pretty, whom I have noticed for some time. It seemed to me that the first time he saw me, but the second time, no. On reaching the Hôtel de Rome I had the carriage turned once more, but he had disappeared; so I went home, having nothing further to do. I come home cheerful and dreamy — but Leclerc arrives and stuffs me full of physics.
