I sleep until noon and feel very unwell all day. Maman gets up; the Greek pays a brief visit. At four o'clock, Dina, Paul, and I go out on horseback; we have three pretty little gray horses. The rain catches us; I open an umbrella and we trot back to the Pouhon, where I take a glass of milk and Dina her water. The entire Haristoff entourage and the duke watch us; once again he greeted me. They have fine-looking men in that entourage.

Je dors jusqu'à midi et suis très mal à l'aise toute la journée. Maman se lève, le Grec fait une courte visite, à quatre heures moi, Dina et Paul sortons à cheval, nous avons trois jolis petits chevaux gris, la pluie nous surprend, j'ouvre un parapluie et nous rentrons en trottant au Pouhon où je prends un verre de lait et Dina son eau. Tout le bataclan Haristoff et le duc nous regardent, cette fois encore il me salua. Ils ont des hommes bien, dans ce bataclan.

The madman who wanted me to sing called on Maman today, tried to persuade her, but left as he came. I shall not go and sing before the public, never having taken a single lesson, and besides, I shall not at fifteen expose myself.

Le fou qui demandait que je chante s'est présenté chez maman aujourd'hui, voulait persuader mais s'en alla comme il était venu. Je n'irai pas chanter devant le public n'ayant jamais pris de leçons, et outre cela je n'irai pas à quinze ans m'exposer.

Thank you to those who think and say well of my voice, but I shall not sing.

Merci à ceux qui pensent, disent du bien de ma voix, mais je ne chanterai pas.

I have not dined; I am hungry and can eat nothing.

Je n'ai pas dîné, j'ai faim et ne puis rien manger.

We stayed some time at the evening music; Monsieur de Jahal and the student from Liege, a certain Crestiano, were with us.

Nous avons resté quelque temps à la musique du soir, M. de Jahal et l'étudiant de Liège, un certain Crestiano étaient avec nous.

I am solemn; it seems to me that I have abominable manners, that I am vulgar, fast,¹ etc., etc., ever since that Gambart said what he said, and Maman harped on the theme for the rest of the day.

Je suis solennelle, il me semble que j'ai des manières abominables, que je suis vulgaire, fast etc. etc. depuis que ce Gambart a dit ce qu'il a dit et maman a varié sur cela pendant le reste de la journée.

In the evening, at Maman's, I allowed myself to be suspected for nothing, so that I feel very ill at ease.

Le soir, chez maman, je me suis laissée soupçonner pour rien de sorte que je suis très mal à l'aise.

They were saying that Walitsky is not Polish, [Crossed out: but] that his mother was German. [Crossed out: then] "My mother was the Baroness Rosen, a Polish woman from Courland."

On disait que Walitsky n'est pas Polonais, [Rayé : mais] que sa mère était allemande. [Rayé : alors] Ma mère était la baronne Rosen, Polonaise de Courlande.

"Ah, that is charming, my dear," I say. "Then I am Marie Bashkirtseva, an Englishwoman from Poltava. You are truly ridiculous, my dear."

— Ah c'est charmant mon cher, dis-je, alors je suis Marie Bashkirtseva, une Anglaise de Poltava ; vous êtes vraiment ridicule mon cher.

[Crossed out: But as] "But of course, certainly. Now tell me, who is Wittgenstein?"

— [Rayé : Mais comme] Mais parfait, comment donc. Voyons dis-moi qui est Wittgenstein.

"And how should I know!" I exclaimed, flustered and without looking at them, for I blushed. I went to the far end of the room. Maman turned her head away; I would have preferred her to look at me.

— Et moi comment le saurai-je ! fis-je troublée et sans les regarder, car je rougissai, j'allai jusqu'au bout de la chambre. Maman a détourné la tête, j'aurais mieux aimé qu'elle me regardât.

"And who is he really, Wittgenstein -- a Pole, a German?" I asked, coming back to the bed.

— Et qui est-il en effet Wittgenstein, un Polonais, un Allemand ? demandai-je en revenant près du lit.

"He is a German, Russian in origin."

— C'est un Allemand russe d'origine.

"That goes back to Adam," I said, interrupting.

— Cela veut dire Adam fis-je interrompant.

It is really stupid.

C'est vraiment bête.
