The two cities of the plain destroyed by fire from heaven for their wickedness in the book of Genesis (Genesis 18–19).Relevance to Marie
On 26 August 1883 the news of the earthquake that destroyed Casamicciola on Ischia on 28 July 1883 (en.wikipedia «1883 Casamicciola earthquake»; see Ischia lottery) leads her to challenge divine justice: «Passe pour Sodome et Gomorrhe. Passe encore pour Herculanum et Pompeï car là Dieu punissait ceux qui envoyaient ses apôtres au martyre ... Mais ici. Où sont les crimes atroces et [inommables] d'Ischia ?» (101.0242). If impiety had to be punished, a centre of atheism should have been struck, not «cette pauvre île catholique, cléricale et paysanne» (101.0244). See HERCULANUM.References in Diary
