This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs where Marie or her family buy things, go to shops, order goods, or run errands: visits to the dressmaker, milliner and glover, trips to bookshops and art suppliers, buying presents, ordering furniture for a new villa, "faire des courses" in town. Shopping in the diary is both a social outing (with her aunt, her mother, Dina) and a record of the family's spending and taste.
Tagging Criteria
- Tag an actual or planned purchase or order: "j'ai acheté", "nous avons commandé", "maman m'a acheté", a dress ordered at Worth, books bought, a present chosen.
- Tag going to shops or running errands, even when nothing is bought: "courir les magasins", "faire des courses", a morning spent at the milliner's.
- Tag a fitting or an order at a dressmaker's (this also takes Fashion).
- Do not tag a dress merely worn or described (that is Fashion only), prices mentioned without any buying (that is Money only), or a gift received with no purchase in view.
- Do not tag "acheter" used figuratively ("acheter le bonheur").
Common French Cues
- Verbs: acheter, commander, choisir, marchander, essayer (at the dressmaker's), faire des courses, faire des emplettes, courir les magasins
Notable Patterns
- Most shopping in the early carnets is for clothes; see Fashion and the fashion houses under culture/fashion (Laferrière, Virot).
- Shops with their own glossary entries live under places/shops (for example Spillmann); tag the place entry as well when the shop is named.
- Shopping often co-occurs with Money when Marie records what things cost.
