Miss Hungerford

Overview

A racehorse, not a woman: Miss Hungerford ran in the big steeplechase at Auteuil on 26 May 1874, in the rain, with President MacMahon and the duchesse de Magenta in their stands. Twenty-one horses were to take three rounds, with twenty-one obstacles and four rivers.

Marie, who loves racing, describes the finish: at the end only four horses arrive, Miss Hungerford leads by a length and a half, then Dominus makes a sublime effort and passes her by a length, but jumps the last river he should not have jumped and is placed second (019.0358).
