Ange

Overview

Ange, a Nice coachman who drove the Bashkirtseffs for «plusieurs mois» before May 1875 (033.0169). The Mon Journal t.5 index has «Ange (cocher), 83», and separately «Ange : Angel (Mme)», where Marie shortens the name of Mme Angel (a different person, t.4).

Relevance to Marie

On 24 May 1875 Marie, Nina and the others slip out of the house in disguise and take a cab, «mais ô surprise le cocher est Ange, le même Ange qui nous a servi plusieurs mois» (033.0169). Despite her «accent britannique et [sa] voix changée le maudit Ange se doute et sourit», recognising chiefly Nina and so guessing the rest (033.0172). Nothing else is said of him.
