Identity

Marie's big yellow-coated dog, bought for her in Vienna in 1870 at three weeks old and named, as the LAN notes assume, after the Vienna Prater park. He is her faithful companion in the early years, later taken over by her mother, and he outlives most of the diary: his death is recorded on 1884-06-05 (104), only months before Marie's own.

• 1873-02-11 (001): «je suis sortie tout seule en voiture avec Prater, à côté de moi.» 1873-06-10 (005): sits on the cab box. 1873-09-09 (009): sits with Pitou (her monkey) on the carriage box.
• 1874-02-04 (016), at the Howards': a gentleman asks «ce qu'est devenu le grand chien qui me suivait toujours, il l'avait remarqué encore à Paris»; «Je ne savais pas que Prater fût si connu, on l'admire.» The question only means Prater was not with her that day.
• 1874-02-22 (017): sits «à côté de moi» in the carriage on the way to church. 1874-05-05 (019): she walks with her «deux chiens Prater et Piccon»; 1874-05-09 (019): leaving for Paris, she regrets «Prater, surtout Prater; il me regardait si tristement».
• 1874-10-04 (024): on her return: «le divin Prater… mon bon, vieux, fidèle, beau, intelligent et incomparable chien». 1874-10-28 (025): «ce géant» bit her mother in play; «quand il se lève et pose ses pattes sur mes épaules il est plus grand que moi».
• 1875-07-16 (037): «Prater qui m'a abandonnée par jalousie pour Victor et qui a passé à maman.» 1875-08-27/28 (040): «C'est un chien unique. A Schwalbach il faisait l'admiration de tous.»
• 1876 (053-057, Rome): Marie plays with the name, calling Prater «Torlonia» (055/1876-03-10, 03-26) and swearing «par lui et par sa barbe»; an "accident très sale" on a walk (055/1876-03-16). 1876-11-19 (067): «Prater a été si content de me voir !»; 1876-12-02 (067): «Victor… Pincio… Bagatelle, Prater… tout cela me regardait dans les yeux».
• 1877 (068-076): travels with her mother by train from Rome to Naples (068/1877-02-08, 02-12, «je l'ai nommé mon fils»); leaves for Schlangenbad with the family (073/1877-08-06); quarrels with Pincio (074/1877-09-08, 076/1877-12-09).
• 1880-05-23 (088): still playing with «Prater, Coco, Pincio». 1884-06-05 (104/1884-06-05): «Prater est mort. Il a grandi avec moi, on me l'a acheté à Vienne en 1870, il avait trois semaines»; «à Rome, je me suis toquée d'un autre chien et Prater fut recueilli par maman.»
