Overview
A head-and-shoulders study of a dark-haired young woman with a red bow in her hair, oil on canvas (relined), 55 × 46,5 cm. It is monogrammed M. B. lower right and dated "X 78" upper left, scratched into the wet paint; the "X" is most naturally read as the Roman numeral for October. It was sold at Villa Grisebach, Berlin, on 2 December 2022 (auction 347, lot 300), with an estimate of €25,000–35,000, from a private collection in southern Germany.
Context
October 1878 is the start of Marie's second year at the Académie Julian, which she entered on 3 October 1877. Other surviving works of that year include the Tête de jeune femme à la plume bleue in Martigues, 55 × 45 cm, and the Caricature de Rodolphe Julian. The sitter is not identified, and no diary passage has been tied to the picture.
