Palais de Castille

Overview

The Palais de Castille, on the Avenue Kléber in Paris, was the residence in exile of Queen Isabel II of Spain, whom Marie calls simply la Reine. Formerly the Hôtel Basilewski, it housed the exiled Spanish Bourbon court after 1868 and served as a royalist and Bonapartist salon; the building is today the Peninsula Paris hotel.

In Marie's Diary

Marie and her mother went there as part of their campaign to enter the most aristocratic Parisian circles. On 1 May 1882 she notes in the margin that she went to the Queen's in the hope of meeting Cassagnac. See La Reine for the visits and the Queen herself.
