Thematic Tag: Money

This thematic tag collects diary paragraphs where money is talked about: cash, prices and costs, spending, debts and loans, allowances and pocket money, bills, gambling at Monaco, and Marie's worries or boasts about being rich or poor. The Bashkirtseff household lived well but not always solvently, and money runs through the family's quarrels. Wealth held as estates, capital, inheritance or dowry belongs to Property.

Tagging Criteria

  • Tag a stated price, cost or sum ("cent francs", "trois mille roubles"), a payment, a debt, a loan, a bill, an allowance, money sent or awaited, gambling stakes and winnings.
  • Tag remarks about wealth or poverty as money ("nous sommes ruinés", "il est très riche").
  • Do not tag figurative value ("cela n'a pas de prix", "je donnerais tout au monde"), or a purchase with no money in view (that is Shopping only).
  • An estate sold for a sum, a dowry in francs, or a rente counted as yearly income takes both Money and Property.

Whose Money: the Qualifier Tags

Every paragraph tagged Money also takes one or both qualifier tags, which say whose money it is:

  • Money: family (`#Money_family`) — Marie's own money or her family's: her allowance, what maman loses at the tables, papa's debts, the household's bills.
  • Money: others (`#Money_others`) — somebody else's money, or money in general: a duke's fortune, a friend's losses, what things cost in Paris, money as a subject.

In the site's filter, selecting the qualifier narrows Money to one side; selecting Money alone shows both.

Common French Cues

  • Currencies: francs, sous, louis, napoléons, roubles, kopecks, lire, livres sterling
  • Nouns: l'argent, la somme, le prix, les frais, la dépense, la dette, les revenus, la pension, la facture, le jeu, la roulette, le trente-et-quarante
  • Verbs: coûter, payer, dépenser, prêter, emprunter, devoir, gagner, perdre (at play), envoyer de l'argent

Notable Patterns

  • Gambling at the Monaco casino recurs in the Nice years; the family's losses and winnings are recorded, sometimes with sums.
  • Money ties into Marriage through a suitor's income, and into the long family disputes over the Babanine and Bashkirtseff estates (see Property).
  • Marie's outfit and shopping notes sometimes give the price, so Money co-occurs with Fashion and Shopping.
