Overview

Marie's «chez Petit» is the art gallery of Georges Petit (1856–1920), the Paris dealer who ran the Galerie Georges Petit, a main rival of Durand-Ruel and the host of the annual Expositions internationales de peinture from 1882; the gallery was at 8 rue de Sèze (en.wikipedia «Georges Petit»; Metropolitan Museum, Modern Art Index Project, «Galerie Georges Petit», which dates the move from rue Godot de Mauroy to rue de Sèze to 1890). The Mon Journal t.16 index lists «Petit (Galerie de peintures) : 173». (Renamed from PETIT and moved to places/buildings in the stub-pass apply, 2026-10-22.)

Relevance to Marie

On 27 August 1883 the prizes of the Ischia charity lottery are on show there: «les lots sont exposés rue de Sèze chez Petit, la salle chic moderne, wolffiste [sic]» (101.0266). The word wolffiste refers to the critic Albert Wolff, who set the tone of the Figaro's art column. Marie had given her Pêcheur à la ligne (PECHEUR_A_LA_LIGNE); see also Ischia lottery. The address in 1883 is stated by Marie; the sources above disagree on when the gallery moved to rue de Sèze, so the 1883 location of the gallery itself has not been verified here.
