Overview
Felix Mendelssohn's Lieder ohne Worte: a series of short lyrical piano pieces written between 1829 and 1845, eight volumes of six pieces each, published separately. In France they were known as romances sans paroles, a staple of the amateur pianist's repertoire. (Source: Wikipedia, "Songs Without Words", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_Without_Words.) Marie and this work
Marie never names a particular number.
- 055.0778, 055.0789 (16 Mar 1876, Rome): she plays "sans paroles de Mendelssohn" softly while Pietro Antonelli sings his own romance to her, then returns to "ma romance sans paroles" when she cannot take him seriously. The footnote there identifies the series.
- 067.0896 (8 Nov 1876): she plays "quelque chose de lent et de passionné… comme les romances sans paroles de Mendelssohn bien comprises peuvent seules être", a comparison rather than a named piece.
