Portrait of Pepino on a blue ground (1875)
Také známý jako: Pépino immense, un Pépino immense, portrait de Pepino
Overview
On 29 October 1875 Marie stays in because "il n'y aura personne, Lachaud plaide" (the trial of the lawyer #Lachaud keeps the Promenade empty) and writes: "je suis en train de mettre au monde un Pépino immense, sur fond bleu" (048.0166). It is a large picture of Pepino (Albert Gautier of Nice, see #Albert_Gautier) on a blue ground. Marie does not say whether it is a painting, a pastel or a caricature, nor whether "immense" refers to the size of the picture or to the sitter, whom she calls a few days later "cet immense bâton de télégraphe" (6 November, 048.0652). Whereabouts unknown; no image.
Marie and this work
Pepino was then paying court to her in the loge and the salon (048.0080-0112, 049.0055), and Marie was making oil caricatures of her Nice circle that autumn (see #Grande_caricature_1875); the picture may belong to that group, but the diary does not say so. This is the only mention of it.
