Hecht

Overview

Henri Hecht, Paris merchant (négociant) and art collector, a close associate of Léon Gambetta and a fixture of the republican and Lesseps circles Marie courts in 1879–1884. He is one man throughout the diary, not two: the Mon Journal indexes a single «Hecht (Henri), négociant» in t.13 (1879), t.15 (1882–83: «16, 146, 149, 228, 272») and t.16 (1884: «195, 295»). «Hecht» in 097.0359 («l'ennemi», 5 January 1883) and the «Juif Hecht» of 105/1884-09-01 are the same Henri Hecht.

Identification and later appearances

Henri Hecht. The Mon Journal t.13 index lists «Hecht (Henri), négociant : 70-71, 75, 84-87, 90-93, 95-97, 100-101, 103, 168-171, 180, 182, 185, 187-188, 211, 221, 304». Marie introduces him on 7 August 1879 as «Hecht, financier juif et ami intime de Gambetta» (086.0009). On 13 September 1879 she dines at his flat «rue du Château d'eau», with «de très beaux tableaux, des Rousseau, des Corot, des Troyon, Delacroix et même Raphaël» (086.0262). Probably the Henri Hecht who, with his brother Albert Hecht (1842–1889), banker and collector, built a large collection of Impressionist pictures (Wikipedia, «Albert Hecht») (0.6). Marie uses him as her entry into republican society: «la combinaison Hecht» (086.0254), «je ne le prends que comme commencement» (086.0279).

«Joseph» in this carnet is Joseph Arnaud de l'Ariège, not Hecht (except Hecht's own telegram signed «Joseph»; tag-audit ruling 2026-10-02).

Later appearances (1880–1884).

• 1880: a republican contact that «a commencé» to cool (087/1880-04-04, «Hecht a commencé»); «un Juif ami de Hecht… Hecht très bien chez les de Lesseps» (087/1880-04-21); at the Chamber with the republican high life, «même Hecht» (089/1880-07-06). Gabriel Géry says «Hecht est celui des amis de Gambetta qui sait le mieux se tenir dans un salon et… a de l'influence sur Gambetta» (090/1880-10-03, 090.0023). Marie, surrounded by enemies, asks «Qu'ai-je fait à Hecht par exemple ?» (090/1880-10-05, 090.0037) and finds Gambetta shielded by «Hecht et… Arnaud» (090/1880-10-27).
• 1881–82: in the next box at Oedipus, «Hecht était dans une loge à côté» (092/1881-08-08); «Hecht nous voit causant avec l'ami de Léon» at Gambetta's session (094/1882-01-26); «Le Juif Hecht est à côté de nous» at the Sarah Bernhardt charity performance (095/1882-05-25).
• 1883: at Gambetta's coffin Maman brings Marie to «Hecht, l'ennemi qui pleurait aussi… Oh ! merci, merci !» (097/1883-01-05, 097.0359; 097.0360 repeats it: Gavini had mistaken him for Bastien-Lepage). «L'ennemi» is Marie's own label, consistent with 090.0037; it does not indicate a different Hecht. On 7 January: «nous sommes décapités comme a dit Hecht» (097/1883-01-07).
• 1884: «nous avons rencontré Hecht dans l'escalier des Italiens. Il est dans l'enthousiasme de mon tableau» (104/1884-05-12); «Le Juif Hecht, et les peintres Béraud et Tissot» (105/1884-09-01).

Marie's «le Juif», «le Juif Hecht» is her period antisemitic labelling; kept as written in the source.

Open point (family). The collector Albert Hecht (1842–1889) had two brothers, Myrtil and Henri, and the brothers' collection was largely Impressionist (en.wikipedia «Albert Hecht»). The diary's Hecht has no first name except through the Mon Journal index, and the source footnote at 105/1884-09-01 gives «Henri Hecht (1840–1891)»; I could not confirm those dates (a web search found 1891 only as the death year of the father, Maurice Hecht). Treat the dates as unverified. A search snippet of the Musée d'Orsay personalities catalogue («Henri Hecht», no. 205216, «homme d'affaires», an early admirer of Manet; not opened) gives 1842–1891, which clashes with Albert's birth on 2 July 1842; the Morgan Library holds 1883 letters from Henri Hecht to Manet and to Suzanne Manet, one written from 60 rue de la Victoire (themorgan.org, Tabarant collection). On 2026-10-22 the dates were dropped from the footnote at 105/1884-09-01 in every tree (OPEN-ITEMS B-78); restore them only with an état-civil source.
