Grands Magasins du Louvre
Také známý jako: Grands Magasins du Louvre, magasin du Louvre, le Louvre (department store), magasins du Louvre
Overview
The Grands Magasins du Louvre were the large Paris department store on the rue de Rivoli, beside the Palais-Royal square and the Grand Hôtel du Louvre (not the museum, which is #Louvre). Per Wikipedia, «Louvre Saint-Honoré», the store opened in 1855 on the ground floor of the Pereire brothers' hotel and took the name Grands Magasins du Louvre from 1863; French sources name Alfred Chauchard and Auguste Hériot among its founders. It was one of the great fixed-price stores of the Second Empire and Third Republic, like #Le Bon Marché. (Dates as given by the sources consulted; they differ by a few years between them.)
Relevance to Marie
Marie uses «le Louvre» (or «le magasin du Louvre») for the store in contrast with the museum, which she also calls «le Louvre» (see the museum entry; the context decides). In 1874 it is the «paradis de Dina», the cousin's love of shops; in 1879 and 1884 she or her mother and the household buy fabric, a skirt and other plain goods there, while her dresses come from the couturiers.
