Zobrazit v deníku 243 zmínek Thematic Tag: Church Attendance
This thematic tag marks diary paragraphs where Marie, or her family with her, actually goes to church: mass, vespers, an Orthodox liturgy (obednia), a Te Deum, a funeral or wedding service, confession or communion, or a visit to a church in order to pray. It answers the question "on which days did she go to church?", so it is deliberately narrower than Religion, which covers faith, prayer, doubt and God in general.
Tagging Criteria
- Tag when a church visit or a service is reported as having happened: "nous sommes allées à la messe", "à l'église russe", "j'ai communié", "après les vêpres".
- Tag habitual attendance stated as fact ("nous allons tous les dimanches à l'église russe") and a service held at home by a priest (a moleben, a blessing of the house).
- Tag a church visit when she prays there, even if no service is under way.
- Do not tag prayer at home, thoughts about God, or religious argument (that is Religion only).
- Do not tag a church seen only as a monument or a painting subject, a church passed in the street, or a plan to go that is not carried out.
- Church and Religion often co-occur, but they are judged separately: Church records attendance, Religion needs faith, prayer or doubt in the paragraph itself.
Notable Patterns
- The family is Russian Orthodox and attends the Russian church where one exists (Nice, Geneva, Paris, St Petersburg), but Marie also goes to Catholic masses, especially in Italy and at Christmas; see Russian Orthodox Church and Notre-Dame de Nice.
- Church is also a social venue: Marie notes who was there, who looked at her, and what she wore, so Church often co-occurs with Fashion and Love.
- Orthodox feast days follow the Julian calendar, twelve days behind the dates Marie writes at the head of her entries.
